The value of 360-degree feedback

In a typical working week where we are constantly replying to emails and trying to get through our long to-do lists, we rarely get the chance to take a breath and think about how our colleagues respond to us. How am I coming across in meetings? Do my emails communicate my intentions clearly? Am I accidentally sending mixed signals? How could I be a more helpful team member?
How can we find out from our team what we are like to work with?
Introducing 360-degree feedback
The 360-degree feedback process involves asking the people who work and interact with us most frequently to complete a survey about our work skills, behaviours and tendencies. The results provide key insights into our strengths, and ways we can grow and develop.
While 360-degree processes have predominantly been undertaken by leaders and managers, they are becoming increasingly popular among all staff. The advantage of a 360-degree process compared to other methods of collecting feedback is that 360s provide comprehensive insights from multiple perspectives into how we work and how our workplace behaviours impact different people.
360-degree feedback in ministry
360-degree surveys specifically tailored for use in ministry environments include survey items about wise living and ministry service (e.g. “Demonstrates godliness of character”) alongside items about communication and interpersonal skills, leadership and teamwork (e.g. “Communicates openly and honestly”). Survey responders provide a rating for each item, and also written comments.
Given the pressures of working in ministry, it can be very encouraging to receive insights into our strengths and helpful suggestions for improvement. For ministers, it can be highly valuable to receive input from select members of the congregation who serve in various ministries, in addition to those on the staff team.
The benefits of 360-degree feedback for admin staff
Church administrators can also benefit from receiving 360-degree feedback. Admin staff often play an unseen but crucial role in planning and coordinating church resources, initiatives and gatherings, and their communication and teamwork skills enable the ministry team to be organised and effective.
Not only does completing a 360-degree survey provides admin staff with practical insights into how their communications and work style interact with the rest of their team, but it also provides an excellent opportunity for the unique value that admin staff bring to the church’s mission to be properly recognised and appreciated.
